Press Report: Peterborough Annual Martial Arts Seminar.

Having attended this seminar for the past few years I was looking forward to this years event. This year being the third year, improved greatly on last year, being held again in a purpose built dojo, with a large matted training area and with a comfortable viewing area for those who needed to take a little time out from training. In what was a packed programme, with over 60 students attending during this two day course, I was surprised at the number of Dan grades training, especially on the Sunday. All the teachers were approachable, both on and off the mat, they were genuinely interested in what the students were saying which allowed all students attending the chance to ask questions.

Saturday. Terry Coughtrey, Kevin Mills, and Joe Carslake.

Terry Coughtrey was, as were all the teachers during this course in `great form’ feeding off an appreciative student base, he taught some good honest old school Jiu Jitsu, developing on themes of striking and defending against knife attacks, not pretty or showboating, just simple and skilful basics based on years of his work within the security industry. Terry recently received his 7th Dan in Jiu Jitsu and, judging by his seminar class, it was obvious why. Long term Kenpo Karate expert Kevin Mills had travelled up from Devon, a really thought provoking class, no long winded explanations, but Kenpo philosophy and practise, demonstrated with real skill and precision, a fantastic coaching style and a great intro to Kenpo for those who had not experienced it before

Joe Carslake as usual, taught his Jiu Jitsu to the high standard that everyone has come to expect. Whenever I see Joe Carslake in action, I come away impressed, with food for thought, inspired, and a greater understanding as to why so many people travel the miles to train with him. Paul King taught a fabulous set, I first saw Paul teach at a seminar a few years ago, and it was a good seminar class. This year was even better, principles developed, explained, and great pressure point and striking taught to all levels whether you were a beginner or a Dan grade, you would have had something to take away from this class, very much improved as a teacher and a “definite hit“ with the students.

Julie Williams taught a great but simple Goshin Jutsu set, good principles, applied anatomy, and explained well, and nice ground work, Lesley King taught a fantastic Tai Chi Set, which had people buzzing afterwards, lots of positive comments from all the students during coffee breaks over this and lots of discussion how Tai Chi fits within their own arts

Sunday. Warren Dickerson, Jo Biggs and James Price.

Iaido was taught Sunday morning, and it was a nice intro lesson for those with no experience, led by Warren Dickerson, who is a skilled and knowledgeable practitioner, not for everyone, but a real pleasure to watch a display of grace and precision within martial arts.
Jo Biggs and James Price led a session together on Goshin Jutsu, aside from being friends for many years, Jo and James have a special teacher/student rapport on the mat enabling them to seamlessly share the teaching task of what was to be a wonderful exercise in good practical Goshin Jutsu combined with a lesson in precision and exactness, all taught with the level of expertise you would expect from teachers of their experience, pitched at a level beneficial to all there.

Jo Biggs completed the final day with some interesting and thought provoking energy work as a cool down appreciated by all. A great seminar, simply put, the standard of seminars in the UK is now very high, and it is easy to say and add words such as word class, and awesome, to describe events, it would be lovely to have spent all day just training with teachers of the calibre of Carslake, Mills, Biggs, Coughtrey, Price and King, because what can you really take from each 1 hour session?

My understanding of events like these is lots, it`s about friendship made and renewed, training at your own pace, and things that are said and taught which give a greater understanding to the art that you study and being surrounded by like minded people who are just enjoying themselves.

“I thought that the instructors over the weekend all worked very well together, it was great to see like minded instructors who all got on well and had so much knowledge to share across a very broad spectrum of material, I felt well at home and welcomed by all that were there. The students where also very keen to learn and participate in every seminar that was given, showing respect and a willingness to learn. If only all events were the same friends were made, which is very important.” Kevin Mills 8th Dan.

“A great seminar always good to see the quality of teachers Paul invites to this seminar, that’s why I come back each year.”Gordon Lawson 7th Dan

“I really enjoy coming to teach here every year in Peterborough, I think the martial Arts taught were of a great standard” Joe Carslake 9th Dan
