So What is BAR?
OK… Let’s put ourselves in the shoes of the thug / mugger or just bad guy that is about to attack you or your loved ones.
BEFORE they attack they have made several decisions:
* Can I win?
* Do I have back up?
* Does my Victim have Back Up?
* Does my victim know I am going to attack?
This thug has gone through all the DIFFICULT decisions about entering into a violent assault… he has weighed up all the Pro’s and Cons and decided YES.. Now is the time to attack!
He has, as I like to put it “seen the light at the end of the tunnel”
Now… BAR.
What that attacker THINKS is the light at the end of the tunnel is REALLY the “HEADLIGHTS OF YOU COMING STRAIGHT AT HIM!”

Lee calls his system the ‘Strike Force System’. And here’s how easy to learn it is… Just SIX SIMPLE MOVES! Yep, that’s right. The whole thing consists of six easy-to-master moves. Why? Because simple works when you’re under fire ! As Lee explains: “People need simplicity when things are on the line. Most self defence and martial arts systems are too complicated… there’s too much to remember… too much choice about what to do next. You don’t have time for that… What’s important is to eliminate the threat as rapidly as possible… ” With only six simple but deadly effective moves you don’t have to be a muscleman, Kung Fu whizz, super fit soldier or specially trained person to put these techniques into action .
Princess Diana was one of the World’s biggest ‘celebrities’…and
she had round-the-clock protection from some of the finest
bodyguards in the World.
One of her bodyguards was a guy called LEE SANSUM.
A guy that who was even photographed with her, and who even has the
signed ‘Thank you’ letter from Princess Diana testifying to his
prowess.
But that was some years ago – and since then, Lee has moved onto
even bigger things…
Now, Lee trains the like of the NIGERIAN Special Forces (in one of
the World’s most *dangerous* countries)…and he’s all about using
the most POWERFUL AND QUICK AND EASY self-defense methods going.
It’s why I’m writing to you today…
As you know.. It is VERY RARE that I ever endorse other material…
However, in the case of Lee Sansum, I have to make an exception.
I have trained with Lee on numerous occassions and have ALWAYS been
impressed with his ability, knowledge, dedication and desire to
help others.

I actually gave an Introduction to.
That’s right.. I was so impressed with Lee and his material, that I volunteered to introduce his material.

Can You Learn Self Defence From A DVD?
March 18, 2010 by goshinman · Leave a Comment
Learning self defense from a DVD
In the past couple days Vonnie has had 2 people call asking if they’d really be able to benefit from our DVD programs.
It’s not an unusual question.
But these two gentlemen had a slightly different concern than most…
…They were 72- and 76-years-old, respectfully.
And each was worried they simply didn’t have the physical skills or ability to execute what they’d see on the DVDs.
Below are a couple items she discussed with them, things everyone needs to be aware of:
If you don’t have the physical skills you used to, it likely means you’re even more of a target for the epidemic of random street violence escalating across the globe today.
It’s the reason why this information is even more critical to you.
Target Focused Training
Here’s a snippet taken from TFT Master Instructor Chris Ranck-Buhr’s recent article, That New Victim Smell …
Gait, body language, the way people move when they come into close contact with others — these things tell the story of that person’s interior life, their secret fears and intentions. In short, who’s a victim and who’s not.
When the criminal sociopath looks for a victim, they scan that tableau and register everybody as a target or trouble. And because they (usually) didn’t get out of bed this morning looking for a fight, or an epic battle, they slide past the trouble-makers and focus on the targets.
To the trained, and to the predator, the victims stand out. They can smell it… and see the stink lines. Acting tough doesn’t hide it. It just amplifies it.
You can’t pretend to not be a victim. The difference between victim and not-victim is unconscious confidence. It radiates from the core, outward, and shines like a beacon even when you’re not paying attention to projecting anything. Your gait, your stance, your body language will give you away, one way or the other. If you know what to do, it shows. If you don’t, well, that’s where the smell comes from…
Remember, it’s got nothing to do with your physical skills or athletic ability. And as Chris says, it it’s not something you can fake.
What surprises most people is the fact you can actually learn this material just from watching the DVDs… even without practice.
I know this may seem counterintuitive and hard to believe but it’s true. And while there have been many cases that prove it, one still stands out in my mind.
Here’s what happened.
Several years ago, a guy bought an old VHS series we offered. He had it sitting by the VCR in his living room and every morning his friend (I don’t remember the name any more, let’s just call him ‘Bob’), anyway, Bob would come over to pick this guy up for work.
Well, seems he was never quite ready so Bob started watching these videotapes, a little bit at a time.
This went on for a while and Bob ended up watching each videotape several times (there were just 2 of them).
But he never once practiced anything he saw on the tapes. In fact, he never even thought about them except during his morning viewings.
Then one day, both these guys and a friend were riding the subway into New York to a job site when they were unexpectedly attacked by several thugs.
Bob was the one who actually wrote the note to us afterwards explaining what had happened.
He talked about how what they resorted to wasn’t pretty (I think he called it ‘downright ugly’) and how nothing happened as they would have expected (how many times have I talked about violence being totally random) but that all 3 emerged with just the expected nicks and bruises.
But what Bob couldn’t get over was how, in the midst of this total chaos he instantly began doing exactly what he’d watched on the videotapes… without hesitation or even giving it a momentary thought.
Looking back, he just couldn’t imagine how this could have happened. To him, it was if someone else was directing him.
And it’s true. Most people in this situation, even those highly trained, revert back to what they learned and did as teenagers. You even see it when you watch reality fighting matches.
Of course, what Bob experienced didn’t surprise us at all. We’ve seen it happen time and again.
Because Bob and his friend weren’t learning techniques while watching those videotapes. They were simply taking what they already knew how to do, overlaying it with the principles of violence, and then putting that on some unsuspecting attackers who made the mistake of thinking these guys would be easy pickings that day.
And it totally refutes those who say you have to go full force against some padded up person made up to simulate a real attacker, to go full speed in practice, to do thousands of monotonous reps of hundreds of techniques you’ll never remember anyway, to toughen up your hands and other body weapons to take the abuse they’ll need to handle, etc., etc.
These guys did none of that. They just watched the videos.
And it’ll stick with them a lifetime.
Now, is it my recommended way of learning TFT?
Nope, not at all.
You’ll get things down much faster practicing with a reaction partner. And you’ll ingrain it all in just 2 days by attending a live training session. It’s like anything else.
But the thing is… unlike all other self defense programs, you CAN pick TFT up very quickly, straight from a DVD. Even without practicing… and even if you’re 76-years-old.
And then you never need to worry about ‘that new victim smell.’

What-If Monkeys Guide By Marc MacYoung

What-If-Monkeys (a field guide to problem people in dojos/seminars/training)
I really like Marc MacYoung’s website at http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com and I have followed it for years as it is exactly as it says on the tin and a reservoir of great information. I read this web page tonight and I have enclosed a snippet here – you can read the full discussion at http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/WIMS.htm.
“Let’s establish something right up front. Engaging in violent conflict is dangerous!
Every time you are involved in violence, it is a crapshoot whether or not you will be injured, crippled or killed. You can do everything “right” and still get injured. If you cannot calmly and rationally accept this reality, then you have no business being in this arena.
Violence is extremely mutable. Those mutations occur from situation to situation and second to second depending on circumstances. As such, attempting to micromanage and have exact pre-planned responses to every possible scenario is unrealistic. Such an attitude hinders mental flexibility and inhibits the responder’s ability to adapt to changing circumstances. This inability increases the danger to the would be responder.
Let us further state, there is NO guaranteed, never-fail, ultimate method to keep from getting hurt. And anybody who tells you otherwise is lying to you — usually in order to get your money.
There are many instructors of so-called combat systems, reality based self-defense programs or deadly esoteric martial arts styles that will take your money in exchange for teaching you their ‘guaranteed system.’
The reason these con men exist is because there are people — who burdened with an over-active imagination — are trying to find a way to never lose. This obsession of theirs leaves them vulnerable to the lies and nonsense of the BS artists who claim they can make you invincible.
The raw truth is that when it comes to losing at violence, everyone gets their turn. Nobody always wins. When that happens, you have to pay the price. You need to know this going in. If you are afraid to take a beating then don’t try to stand up and fight, run away.
While that may stick in your craw, it is a far safer strategy. Violence is dangerous because it mutates so fast. Things change in the blink of an eye. But this is not chaos, nor is it random. It is:
a) the OODA loop (see later) being executed at high speed — by everyone involved
b) factors/conditions that existed previously, but were unknown to you
c) physics and results vs. what you intended (or hoped) would happen
These can be summed up as decisions, surprise and unintended consequences. All change what is happening. And they all occur really, really fast in violence. While violence may look chaotic and random, if it were slowed down, these points would be easier to identify and see the results.
In order to best navigate through violence one must have the ability to adapt, improvise and overcome — and do it quickly. Your plans and actions need to change as fast as the circumstances. And even then you run the risk of not being able to adapt fast enough. This is why there are no guaranteed ways to always ‘win’ or remain unscathed when it comes to violence. There is no system that cover every possible mutation or requirement.
However, there is a particular mindset; people who are both obsessed with the image of violence and a desire to micromanage it, who keep the hucksters of ‘guaranteed fighting systems’ rolling in money. No matter what is presented to them, such people’s fertile imagination always finds a bigger, badder boogey man and weakness with the information. It never occurs to them how often their fantasies of violence defy the laws of physics, common sense, odds, chances and disregards how violent people behave.
All they can see is their fear and their obsession with winning and not getting hurt.
We have a name for these people.
It is a name based on the question they are always chattering.
We call them “What-If- Monkeys.”
Or WIMs for short.”

OODA

It has become an important concept in both business and military strategy. According to Boyd, decision-making occurs in a recurring cycle of observe-orient-decide-act. An entity (whether an individual or an organization) that can process this cycle quickly, observing and reacting to unfolding events more rapidly than an opponent, can thereby “get inside” the opponent’s decision cycle and gain the advantage.
Getting stuck does not lead to winning, since “In order to win, we should operate at a faster tempo or rhythm than our adversaries–or, better yet, get inside [the] adversary’s Observation-Orientation-Decision-Action time cycle or loop. … Such activity will make us appear ambiguous (unpredictable) thereby generate confusion and disorder among our adversaries–since our adversaries will be unable to generate mental images or pictures that agree with the menacing as well as faster transient rhythm or patterns they are competing against.”
Boyd developed the concept to explain how to direct one’s energies to defeat an adversary and survive. Boyd emphasized that “the loop” is actually a set of interacting loops that are to be kept in continuous operation during combat. He also indicated that the phase of the battle has an important bearing on the ideal allocation of one’s energies.
Boyd’s diagram shows that all decisions are based on observations of the evolving situation tempered with implicit filtering of the problem being addressed. These observations are the raw information on which decisions and actions are based. The observed information must be processed to orient it for further making a decision.
Generating Maximum Power

Generating Maximum Power
I remember for much of my youth my martial arts training revolved around speed. I was always trying to punch and kick faster. Often you were judged on how many strikes you could deliver in a given amount of time.
We’ve previously already discussed the importance of striking a specific target on the other guy’s body, so lets talk about speed. Where does it factor in when you fight?
First a little physics is in order — Force x Velocity = Power.
Most instructors in the combat sport and martial arts world focus on just one aspect of the equation… Speed. (Speed is how fast an object moves, velocity is how fast an object moves from point a to b.)
Why?
Because most of those disciplines are taught in what Target-Focus(TM) Training terms the Effect-State(tm). The Effect-State revolves around you reacting to an event that already has occurred. In fact, it can be argued that most of society operates in this defensive state of mind. That subject would require a separate post altogether.
In a fight it is natural that if you operate in a Effect-State you will try to compensate for your waiting to see what the other guy is doing — with speed.
Problem is… speed without force is only a portion of the equation, and even if your targeting is accurate, you strike with static force. In fighting, a static-force strike would be a punch using only your arm speed to strike rather than putting your entire bodyweight behind the punch.
Essentially, in the context of fighting, a speed-only response equals FEAR. I’m not saying it can’t be effective sometimes, just that you are counting on ALWAYS being able to be faster than the other guy.
I don’t like those odds.
Target-Focus(TM) Training was developed with the idea that you may not be faster or stronger than the other guys but you compensate for those realities by operating in the Cause-State(tm), striking with dynamic rather than static force.
I’ve touched on operating in the Cause-State in earlier newsletters so lets explore using dynamic force.
Dynamic force allows you to strike with the full power equation, putting your bodyweight behind each strike to maximize damage and minimize the length of the conflict.
The key to generating dynamic force is understanding how to properly lock your body and transfer your body weight into each strike. This can be accomplished quickly with some basic exercises and on-the-mat training at a Target-Focus(TM) Training seminar.
Although it is beyond the scope of this newsletter to try to instruct this method, I will say that one way to start the process is to SLOW DOWN your free-fight sessions, hit your targets, and leave your body weapon on the target until your opponent MOVES AWAY from your body weapon.
Most people strike and quickly take their body weapon off the target. This does not allow for the force of the blow to penetrate the other guy’s body. It is the other guy that should move from the force if you want to generate maximum power. This also gives you feedback as to whether you are in balance when you strike.
You may do this at slow speeds and get the feedback without injuring your training partner. Quickly, you and your training partner can increase your speed AND deliver maximum power.
So let Hollywood entertain you with SPEED but make sure you TRAIN for POWER.
Until next time,
Tim Larkin
