Kung Fu: This refers to the many diverse Chinese martial arts: Shaolin, Shuai Chiao, Wing Chun, Drunken boxing, Taijiquan, Xingyiquan, Yiquan, Lau Gar, Hung Gar and many more. The Chinese words kung fu can be used to describe one’s skill in any discipline, not just martial arts. Check the menu for specific kung fu.
Kung fu and wushu are popular terms that have become synonymous with Chinese martial arts. However the Chinese terms kung fu (Chinese: pinyin: g?ngf?) and wushu (traditional Chinese: simplified Chinese: pinyin: wushù) have very different meanings. Wushu can describe greatly varying martial arts traditions. Kung fu can be used in a context without any martial arts whatsoever. Colloquially, kung fu (or gung fu) alludes to any individual accomplishment or cultivated skill obtained by long and hard work. In contrast, wushu is a more precise term that refers to general martial activities. The term wushu has also become the name for a modern sport similar to gymnastics involving the performance of adapted Chinese bare-handed and weapons forms (tàolù) judged to a set of contemporary aesthetic criteria for points.

Peterborough and Oundle Wing Chun Kung Fu
Wing Chun is an art which is based around a very effective self-defence system. The art also promotes good health by relying primarily on relaxation and sensitivity when applying the techniques. This allows a more holistic approach to staying healthy by focusing on mind, body and spirit simultaneously rather than regarding each as a separate entity. As a self-defence system Wing Chun is quite different from many other martial arts in that it relies on economy of motion and simplicity rather than excessive, “flashy” and complex movements. It also relies on an understanding of energies and an ability to redirect an opponents energy rather than blocking it by force alone. As Wing Chun assumes the opponent (aggressor) is bigger and stronger all of the techniques contained in the system will work no matter how big or strong that physical threat is.

Lau Gar Kung Fu is a traditional Southern Chinese self-defence system, based on the defensive movements of several animals, as originally taught to the monks of the Shaolin Temples. Many of the systems of Kung Fu which exist today can be traced back to the Five Animals Fist Form practiced there. The Southern systems of Kung Fu were refined into 5 major styles: Hung, Lau, Choy, Li and Mok, named after their originators, the suffix “Gar” meaning family. The master acknowledged as founder of Lau Gar (sometimes pronounced Liu Jia, depending on the dialect being used) was a stick fighter and tiger hunter called Lau Sarm Ngau (or Liu San Yan).
The name means “Three-eyed Lau”, for Master Lau had a deep scar in the centre of his forehead, which looked from a distance like a third eye. Master Lau learned the fighting arts at the Kuei Ling Temple, which was also the birthplace of the Hung family style (you may have heard of Hung Gar Kung Fu, in many ways a style similar to Lau Gar). The origins of the style can, therefore, be considered to be closely linked with those of Hung Gar. The forms, or sets, of Lau Gar are based on the five original animal styles of Shaolin Kung Fu, often referred to as the ‘five ancestors’. These are: the tiger, crane, dragon, snake and leopard. There is a strong emphasis on tiger forms, for strength and external power, and crane forms, for balance and agility.
